Edinburgh is the second largest city in Scotland, a vibrant city known for its perfect balance between traditional and contemporary attraction. There are over 4500 buildings to explore in Old Town and the Georgian New Town of Edinburgh that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The skyline is dominated by the Castle that sits on its own volcanic rock overseeing Edinburgh and attracts millions of visitors year by year.

Weather

Edinburgh has like much of the rest of Scotland a moderate climate but delegates should be prepared for windy and rainy weather at times. The average temperature in May is 14°C (57°F) during the day and 6°C (43°F) at night.

The time zone in Edinburgh is GMT, British Summer Time is GMT +1:00 from the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October.

Currency

Britain’s currency is the Great British Pound (sterling) – GBP. Symbol for pound sterling is £.

Smoking Policy

With the smoking ban implemented in Scotland in March 2006, smoking is no longer allowed in the majority of enclosed public places and on public transport to protect people from the harmful effects of passive smoking. Certain hotels may allow guests to smoke in designated smoking rooms.

Electricity

The electricity in the UK is 220-240V/50Hz and accommodates a 13 amp plug with 3 rectangular pins which are different from common European plugs. Adaptors can be purchased in the major electrical shops.

Passport and Visa

A valid passport is required to enter the UK, for visitors from certain countries a visa is required. For specific visa information please contact the British Consulate in advance of your travel.
Delegates requiring a letter of invitation to attend the Congress should click here. You will then be asked to complete a form regarding your personal details and an invitation letter will then be generated and emailed to the delegates.

Please note that a letter of invitation will be provided to assist delegates in obtaining a visa or permission to attend the congress and should not be considered as an official invitation covering fees and other expenses.

Language

The official language of WFC 2012 is English. No simultaneous interpretation will be provided.
